RX100 + Zhiyun Crane M: Made for Each Other - 4K Video Demo
1

Face it, for video, the RX100 cameras do not have the best stabilization, especially for 4K, in which it excels in resolution. It's ok, maybe better on the VI (but it needs to be at the long end). So, a gimbal can be very helpful.

Most people think gimbals are for trick shots - moving with the camera, following people, ground level moves. But, gimbals also steady static shots that make up most of videos. And these are tripod steady, without the tripod. No IBIS or OIS or EIS or IBIS+OIS+EIS can compare (and not BOSS either - it's two axis, a gimbal has three).

There are two problems with shooting video on a gimbal:

1. When you press the record button on the camera, you shake the camera. It then takes a little while to settle. It's awkward. It takes two hands.

2. You can't zoom while shooting, since pressing on the lever moves the camera, a lot.

A remote (or cell phone app) solves these problems, but then you have to manipulate using two hands. Awkward. You could attach the remote to the gimbal, making for a heavier, unbalanced thing still requiring two hands.

And, of course, balancing a camera on a gimbal before shooting is not fun. and some gimbals are heavy, and make noise.

The Zhiyun Crane M is a small, lightweight noiseless powerful gimbal that has a number of features that make it useful:

1. It has a 12-18 hour battery life. So, you basically can leave it on and forget it is powered. Just worry about exhausting the battery on the camera - which you will.

2. It is easy to balance - there are thumbscrews and markings, so it is easy to repeat once you balance.

3. But key: with an optional wire available from Zhiyun, the gimbal can control the RX100 - you can start and stop video with a button on the gimbal and you can control the zoom! No touching the camera for shooting and zooming. One hand - holds the gimbal and controls the camera. You decide what to with the other hand...

So how does it perform? This very short 4K demo video shows you some static shots - looks like a tripod was used -two zooms, and walking while shooting. You judge. No talk, just watch. It's the RX100 V (shot in Slog2).
