A tapered and pointed wood screw.
A cylindrical and flat-tipped machine screw.

thought it was a bolt
i thought a screw was pointed
so how is a machine screw different from a bolt?

Ooops! Sorry - I meant to say bolt. Must have nuts on my mind. There's a naughty joke in there but I won't repeat it here. ;)

Ahhhhh, yes, I see. That would be a self-tapping screw. You use that when you don't want to drill first and you're going into wood, sheetrock, etc.
so how is a machine screw different from a bolt?
I believe a machine screw is just a non-self-tapping (flat - no point) screw. You'd use that for assembling parts, as opposed to construction.

A bolt gets a nut and it's head is turned with a wrench, not a screwdriver.

That's about the nuts and bolts of it all! ;) Lucky for you I'm a mechanical tomboy! What is with that anyway? It should be "Tomgirl". Tom is always a boy!

WHoa baby, not so fast. The guy at the butterfly exhibit said there is technically no distinction between moths and butterflies. So I said, "So the deal is that the ugly ones are called moths and the pretty ones are called butterflies?". He cringed and said, "Yes, well.... but we dont' like to say that."! LOL! Personally I think he must be mistaken. I find it hard to believe taht those ferocious looking big-fat-headed ugly moths are the same species as those delicate, slender butterfly bodies.

I'm not in the habbit of touching dead flies! LOL!
OH! Smack me hard for even looking! That was gross. I KNEW it'd be gross but I went anyway. AWESOME shot, but GROSS!!!! Ick! Good thing I knew it was dead or I probably would have knocked my monitor right off the desk with a fly swatter! Imagine if those things really were that big? AUUUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Guys:
Hope this one works.
Don.

LOL! Very cute. I overheard them. He bolted after her, "Come back, baby, I thought you were nuts for me!". "Awwww, go screw yourself!".

LOL!

from dictionary.com
moth:

2 : any of various usually nocturnal lepidopteran insects with antennae that are often feathery, with a stouter body, duller coloring, and proportionately smaller wings than the butterflies, and with larvae that are plant-eating caterpillars

... of course, it's been a LONG time since we learned the differences in school, and perhaps your guy meant 'technically no distinction' in the same way that there's technically no distinction between crocodilians.

it's spelled Thomboy, short for Thomasina, don't you know anything!?
I thought it looked odd but after the screw dicussion I figured I'd let Feivel redeem himself so I didn't question it. ;) Ok, according to both Funk and Wagnall, it is "tomboy". So Feivel, watcha got to say for yourself now? Maybe something like "thomboy" is the British spelling - like colour, behaviour, theatre, etc.?

Lonnit, giggling!
Not according to AOL's spell checker:-)
