Who needs a 500mm f4 lens when a 250mm will do just as well on a micro four thirds.

Indeed: is a 250mm f2 lens cheaper to make in the same quality? Then that's a win for the smaller sensor.

A 250/2 will be very similar size and weight to a 500/4.

Canon’s 200/2 costs nearly $6000 and weighs 2.5 kg

Canon’s 400/4 costs nearly $7000 and weighs 2.1 kg

Does not sound like an obvious decision to me.

Smaller sensor sizes do not result in smaller lenses, unless you are prepared to give up on (equivalent) aperture, which I and many others are happy to do without fooling ourselves that the quality is the same.

A 500/4 on FF is NOT the same as a 250/4 on MFT.  The equivalent is 250/2.  Similar size, weight and cost.  No savings.
