Backbutton focus useful on M5?

I have kind of a beginner question. I have an M5, which has that *-button. My understanding of what this button does exactly is shaky, and the manual is really not helpful about it, but I guess it's supposed to focus on something and then lock the focus and/or exposure so I can focus and recompose, yes?

Now comes my question: why would I want to do this if the M5 has the excellent ability to focus by tapping or sliding the screen?? Isn't it much more natural to compose, then focus by touchscreen?

Would be happy about any clarifications and opinions.
