Why I Switched From Sony To Canon

Why I Made The Switch From Sony FF to Canon APSC

I have been along time Sony fan and have enjoyed the nex7, a6000, and A7 series. Although I still own a a6000 with just the kit lens for a second camera, I just replaced my Sony A7 II with a Canon Rebel T7i. With the $$$$ I got from selling the A7 and kit lens and a 50 FF Macro, I was able to buy the Canon Rebel, 24mm 2.8, the 10-18mm and the 55-250mm, a bag, a flash and a extra battery.

So to the reason for the switch. It was $$$$. I wanted the Sony 10-18mm but it was $1000 on sale. The Canon is IS as well was $350. It was selling here in Canada with the 50mm 1.8 for $450. These 2 lenses with Sony are on sale right now for $1350 and I can’t for the life me see that there is that much of a difference. I wanted the 90mm Macro for Sony ($1500) and Canon’s is $800. Even less if I went Tamron or Sigma. There are some well priced Sony lens that are mostly APSC and a few of them are good quality. There are a couple economical FE lenses but most are not within my price range and even if I could afford them, I hasten to see the value vs canon lenses.

I recently did an exercise in documenting all Sony, Canon, Nikon, Olympus and Panasonic’s lens offerings and prices. Canon came out on top by a fair margin. Within a week and had sold the Sony A7 and bought canon.

For $1615 I got the Rebel T7i, a Prime lens, wide angle zoom lens and a standard telephoto Zoom, alone with a bag, and second battery and a flash. I had paid $2800 for the A7 with kit lens and 50mm Macro.

I am very happy with the Rebel, it seems very fast, not to big and all lenses are really really good. I wish I had made the move years ago. As for size, we’ll there isn’t a big difference in size from the Rebel T7i and the A7 and the lenses I have seem just as small or smaller than the Sony lenses. The only thing I miss so far is composing from the LCD, easily seeing the adjustments and I like the Sony Viewfinders better.

i still love Sony and will likely always have a Sony Camera. They make incredible camera bodies, but I just could not afford to build my lens system with them and as a hobbyist only, I can’t see the value proposition either.
