Sigma 100-400 AF with Metabones IV

I was taking some photos of some mountain goats about 10AM last weekend.

It was a bright sunny day. I was first using at Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC with my sony A7r3 and metabones iv adapter. the adapter was set to Green mode (phase detect). it seemed to work well on the Tamron but it's a faster f/2.8 lens.

Then I put the Sigma 100-400 on. I had trouble locking focus in AF-S half the time. I had the focus selected in the center of the frame, f/7.1, focusing on the edges of the goat's face.

Any suggestions to improve the focus with this lens? should I used contrast detect / advanced mode on the adapter, choose a different type of focus, use another adapter, or technique?
