Re: controling exposure for video, panasonic g7

With video shooting your shutter speed is generally locked. High shutter speeds can give motion a staccato look which can be unappealing. So that leaves aperture and ISO. Often you may not wish to adjust aperture, such as wanting shallow DoF. To achieve this in bright light can be problematical. However there is a solution, and that is Neutral Density filters, which allow you to reduce exposure without changing shutter speed or aperture. ND's come in two forms - single value, or variable. A high quality variable is probably the way to go for video shooting. I use a Singh Ray Variable that can reduce exposure by up to 8 stops, allowing me to use large apertures in bright light. This is also handy for stills in the same bright light situation where a high shutter speed is inadequate for reducing exposure. They also allow for long exposures to get that wispy look in seascapes, or light trails in cityscapes. Overall for video shooting, ND's are an essential element in your toolkit.
