LR, Photoshop, an ICC Profiles

I've been printing from LR Classic, with reasonable success. A much more experienced acquaintance prefers Photoshop; says it provides more control. So, I'm starting down that path.

First challenge: Soft-proofing. It's quite straightforward from LR, once your profiles are in the correct folder. In PS, however, it took me a while to figure out where the profiles are loaded; eventually I found Edit/Assign Profile. This appears to permanently attach a profile to an image--that is, until that profile is replaced by another one. Not exactly the way I'd expect soft-proofing to work, but OK.

But then I compared the image from LR (soft-proofing on) to the image in PS (same profile loaded). The results are DRAMATICALLY different. LR first; these are screen captures:

LR Classic, MK-PhotoRag ICC Profile

Now PS Classic:

Photoshop Classic

First Q--what am I doing wrong? Second: What's the correct way to load profiles and do soft-proofing in Photoshop Classic?

Thanks.
