Still waiting someone to show what would be more logical menu and explain why it is so....
Let's just review some of the "charming" aspects of Olympus menus:
- On the first page alone there's much to discuss. The FIRST available option leads to format and erase all. Seriously, WTFF? It's risky, and these things don't warrant a prime position like that.
Heh, in my case format and erase menu items are pretty much only ones I access through menu, everything else is changed through custom settings or panel. So I'm OK with their position.
It's quite easy to pinpoint what the problem is: Olympus menus were designed by the engineers, who know their product intimately, and make full use of all the available physical controls. I'm sure that one or more of the Oly defenders will yell that there's buttons and dials for all of this, but that's the thing - when I use an unfamiliar camera, if I can't find the controls directly on the body, I'll go into the menu. Olympus' warped logic is not at all meant for that kind of behavior, however - the menus are a dog's breakfast of beginners' and experts' settings with no ground in between for experienced photographers that come from different backgrounds, or even Olympus shooters trying to learn more advanced techniques. This last group, in particular, has no other option but to sit down and study carefully about whatever they're wanting to experiment with, because a wrong turn in the "gears" maze can mean a ton of frustration and lost shooting opportunities.
I agree that menus seem to be created by engineers. And translated by people, who have no experience in photography. Though Olympus is fixing menus in firmware updates, IIRC in last E-M1 update some were changed to more understandable.
Actually I have not so big problem with menus: yes, they are using icons which are hard to understand and their location may be questionable. But more problematic is lack of help when some options create combinations which are not so easy to understand. E.g. there was about month ago question about adjusting EVF brightness: selecting this menu option made LCD black and EVF switched on so you can see adjustment effect immediately. But if you did not notice that EVF switches on then this creates impression that for some reason menu was cancelled. Better would be to show message on LCD : "use EVF to make adjustments".
Another example: I set front button by lens for focus limiting and defined 3 ranges. But when I tried set focus limiter while shooting it didn't work. I tried several times and pressed button so hard that my fingers hurt (it was early spring and my hands were freezing so this made things even worse). Only later I realized that I had focus limiter on my lens set and this disabled camera focus limiter. Some message in EVF in such case would have helped, with current solution I already though that camera button is not working.
