I didn't interpret it that way because he didn't say anything to clarify.

He called out the different focal length in each shot. He didn't call out the difference in shooting distance.

I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. The difference in shooting distance is obvious so there is nothing to indicate he was trying to exclude it from the discussion.

But he did not acknowledge that the change in appearance of the background and foreground in the images was ONLY caused by the change in distance.  Yes - compression is real but is not *caused* by the lens, it's only caused by the camera position relative to the objects in the image.
