How to get fixed columns width in Finder?

Hi all
I often need to browse folders containing multiple subfolders that I view in List so I can expand and retract them at will. Files and folders names can be rather long.
Each time I expand and retract folders or I make a search, columns are automatically resized to their default width, very narrow. To be able to read names I constantly need to put them to correct width.
I looked in the Preferences and found nothing to stop this behavior.
There must be a Terminal command line or a utility that can disable this unwelcome automatism.
I have yet another little issue: transparency. It has no practical consequence but it’s distracting and annoying. I would like to disable that in the Finder and in iTunes. Possible?
