Original Canon 100-400 EF L or Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD?

Hello, I'm off to Botswana next month and really need to obtain a telephoto lens for my Canon 650EOS. I could stretch to $1000 dollars and for that I could get a Tamron 100-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di VC USD with a tripod mount. However I have found somebody selling an orginal canon EF L 100-400 in fair condition manufactured in 2000 for $685 which is considerably cheaper, money I could be putting towards a battery grip, If these prices seem unreasonable, thats the best offers I've found where I live in Sweden.

So how do these two lenses compare? is it worth buying the older EF L and saving $325? or is the Tamron lens considerably better?  Any advice would be most welcome.
