How does Eye-AF work?

Hi

There is alot of talk, articles and videos about the sony eye af feature. Some reviewers show the capability of the camera to track the human eye, depicted by the green rectangle following it almost everywhere in the frame.

Lets assume the camera tracked the eye well and now starts focusing on it. My first guess is it just selects the closest phase detect point and focus will be acquired at that location. This would imply that perfect eye auto focus can not be attained at every position if the eye is too small in the frame.

Is there something i am missing?

In the case the closest phase detect point is not on the eye we still get a result probably equal to face detection. So if the DOF is not very shallow it would probably not matter much.
