16-35 f/2.8 II self destructed

The other day my 16-35L II which I purchased new in 2010 and never abused (never dropped, etc) self destructed.  The camera and lens was slung over my shoulder, when all of a sudden I heard a metallic thud and saw the lens barrel on the rocks which then rolled into a stream.  The base of the lens was still attached to the camera body.  Has this happened to anyone else?  I did find 1-2 other threads with something similar with the same lens but wondering if there are others out there.  I brought it into an authorized canon lens repair shop they said it is beyond repair (ie not economical).  What should I do with the remains?
