Should I use a UV filter on my 16mm f1.4? If so, which brand?

So I just picked up a used 16mm f1.4 for a pretty good price. Now I’m wondering if I should buy a UV filter to protect the lens? I typically do this just as a precaution but then I hear the argument of “Why spend money on good glass just to put a $30 or so glass piece on the end of it?”...is there any merit to that statement?

I only ask because while I like to protect my lenses (I can be rough on them at times, accidental bumps and all), I don’t want to degrade the IQ...especially since I plan on this lens being used as my new workhorse lens for just about everything. Portraits, group shots, landscapes, etc.

on top of all that, which brand do I go with if I do decide to get one? Amazon has their “basics” version which gets good reviews. Tiffen is cheap and gets good reviews as well. Then there’s B+W at 3x the price...are they the top quality? Does their price justify them as being THAT much better?

Any help is appreciated as always!
