What Happened to the Variable Optical Low Pass Filter?

As someone who previously owned the Sony RX1R II and was just reviewing some photos taken on my Sony A7R III which have some issues with moire it reminded me of that feature and just wondering if anyone knows why Sony hasn't included it in the A7R III or other A7/A9 cameras? Maybe it can only work in a fixed lens compact, or was it just not considered that good in practice? Anyway, hoping that a RX1R III with decent battery life and faster autofocus will make an appearnce before too long. I had a love/hate relationship with that camera but the concept was really good, especially for street photography.
