So, what was wrong with the 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS?

As everyone knows by now, the next generation of the 70-200 f/2.8 is around the corner, and in a matter of weeks we will have the new gold standard in lens technology. So I have to ask myself, just what was wrong with the 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS? What do you think Canon is trying to fix/improve in this next iteration? I have heard things about the Nikon 70-200mm being the reason for this change, how is the Nikon superior, and do you think it will be in Canon's new version? Will it make the current 70-200mm obsolete?
