I've had this case for well over a year now and love it. As you say, it's handsome and compact. Also, it's extremely sturdy and provides much better protection than those soft-sided nylon cases with zippers that scratch. I too never use the belt loop. I prefer to carry it in my daypack or the pocket of my cargo shorts until I'm ready start taking pictures, at which point the case gets removed and deposited back in the daypack or pocket. I use the minimalist wrist strap that came with the G7XII.

As far as the shoulder strap (which I have never used), I don't know why you say it is permanently affixed and can't be removed. I can see from your photos, it's identical to the one that came with mine. Just slide the nylon webbing thru the plastic slider and the strap is easily removed. If that's too difficult for you, get a pair of scissors and go snip, snip. You can then attach whatever strap you like to the side rings.
