Composition vs subject?

Recently i've started enjoing wider/environmental portrait and i have a question for you guys in the portrait forum:

Not every (human) subject do well with wider focals, when you take pictures of such a subject, do you just try to compose at the (wider) focal that allows you the composition and the look of the picture that is in your mind or let the fact that the main subject looks better with more compression drive the composition elsewhere?
