Expertise wanted in portrait retouching for a dear colleague ...

A colleague of mine lost her (Italian) mother when she was 8 yrs old. A joyrider drilled his car at high speed into the car of her mother, who was launched, and died. Still worse, when my colleague was 12 yrs old, her (Dutch) father died in a chemistry plant while inspecting a polluted tank.
My colleague posted a picture (1970's) of herself being cradled by her mother at her Facebook page (first pic). As this picture has an obvious color cast, I tried to remove this in CS6 by Blur-Average and using Labcolors (2nd pic).

Unfortunately the original picture is very weak and with low resolution. So my retouching remains poor, with wrong skin colors and too little bite.

Could anyone of you give this remindful portrait a better look ? I'm sure my colleague will be very grateful for that ...
