Looking for a miracle--wide-to-medium telephoto for low light

I'm a volunteer photographer with a local fire department. Lighting and shake are a real problem when they are working in very low light. I'm currently using a Nikon DSLR. Most of the time, I'm shooting with the 18-105 nikkor kit lens 3.5-5.6 and pushing the ISO rating on my camera to the max at 3200.

Any suggestions? Since I don't earn my living from this gig, I'm happy to buy non-Nikkor lenses if it can save a bit of money. I'd like to do a good job for the company, and I'm missing quite a bit because of the slow shutter speeds.

Thanks!!
