Because the interpolation takes away sharpness, and the cropping takes away resolution.

Wow I just see how critical I was against this lens four months ago. Well, short update : I have bought the lens and after some comparisons sold the 18-200. Despite the correction, the lens is far sharper than the already awesome 18-200. Additionally it is smaller and lighter and it has become my absolute favorite multi purpose lens. And uncorrected, it is shorter than 18mm on the short end, rather 17 or 16.5 mm, which is great for me.
