Does it get ANY better than this???????????????

Ron......
stupid question but, are you saying that white finish actually
costs more than black? I never even thought about that choice.

However, I think her offer is generous enough as it is, I'm not
going to

push it to the limit (reminds me of an old song (Double Vision) lol

I was refering to White lenses as being "L" series lenses. "L" lenses are usually (but not always) white. The white is to keep the internal temperature down because of the coatings. It also keeps the lens from getting temperture distortions for long telephoto lenses. If you've ever watched heat waves coming off of a road, you can see what this would mean inside a lens. On a telephoto, these heat wave inside the lens spells distortion.

My second choice for a long lens (If I didn't already have my 100-400L) would be the Sigma 50-500 .... what a nice chunk of glass.

Wow Ron,
you ARE a zoom freak like me, are you not? :-)

Tell me you are not walking around shooting handheld with that 50-500 Zoom? And, about how much did that one set you back? That sounds like the kind of range I could get used to using for my wildlife shooting.

I have the Canon 100-400 L IS USM... almost always leave the IS turned off and handhold it all the time. No problem.

I borrowed a Sigma 50-500 from a friend to try out... also handheld it at 500mm... ISO 800 and handholding is not a problem... other than the thing is huge and heavy ;-) Extra 100mm over my 100-400 and half the price. Very super lens for the money.

Like I said, if I didn't already have the 100-400L, the Sigma would be the lens I would have. Really sharp.... but you would need to do some bench presses and curls to warm up before using it...LOL

Mark,

Only if you can take it with you during a round of golf for some "nature" shots!

Congrats,

Today, I was flip flopping on my decision to get a 10D.

All morning, one side of my brain fighting the other.....

Right side: get the 10D
Left side: but you can buy a nice lens, CF card and 300D for just
a little more than the 10D by itself

Right side: but I don't like the way the camera feels in my hands
and I don't like the smaller viewfinder and, I don't like the slap
stick mirror mech.
Left side: come on, it's better than the F707 you had, still a nice
step up from it and, it will take care of most of your photographic
needs.

This is the kind of fighting that was going on in my head.

Then: enter the fiance (oh yeah, I'm engaged now :-)

She says: "I'll buy you the 10D and whatever you want for it as a
present.
This means: no Christmas for you and, no birthday for you either LOL

I say: (taken from the Honeymooners) "Babe, you're the greatest"

Nice story, huh?

So, like I said: does it get any better than this?????? :-)

The only thing that I can think of that would be just a bit better would be when the wife (yeah, I'm married already. :-)) says to get the Digital Rebel and some gear to outfit it, and then get the next body that makes you really, really happy later on after you've made some money with the Rebel.

Wow! :-)

Sorry Dave, the last time I played golf was at a par 3 course when I was 20 years old. LOL Basketball was my "thing" then.

Today, I'd rather be at the beach than the golf course doing a nature shoot.

BTW, did you know there are MORE golf courses here in Florida as a state,

than there are ANYwhere in the world as a country? Yep, over 1,000 golf courses here in the sunshine state :-0

Mark,

I know the feeling. My D100 and assorted equipment was my anniversary, X-Mas, birthday, Veteran's Day, Columbus Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day present.

We're very lucky to have loved ones who know how much our obsession means to us and tolerate it. I wish I could have snapped my wife's expression when during our recent Florida trip I rushed back in our hotel room at 11:00 pm, grabbed my cameras and explained that I had just found this great spider and rushed out again.

you may get the (camera) body you want, but she'll certainly have a few new home improvement projects for you to work on as well. :-)

I'll also venture a guess that you'll be happy to accomodate her should she ask.

Have fun,

PS Does this mean you've officially decided you want the 300D?

You may want to consider the cost of descent lenses before you jump.

I understand what you are saying, Akkers. Thank you for your advice.

I'm going to start out with a Canon 28-135 IS and my already (albeit old)

75-300 MM EF II Canon lens. That's my starting point till I feel I'm really comfortable with the camera. A few months down the road, I'll take a look at how things are progressing and start to research other future lenses. I'm not going to have many lenses though because of the type of photography I do mostly.... macro / still life and wildlife. I'm not a portrait guy...
at least not yet :-)

Mark,

I hope you went with the 10D--knowing what I know abou you, you will be much happier with the 10D. I think it is more along the lines of what you will be happt with (but then again, I only know you over the net ;-) ).

But yep, it doesn't get any better than having a wonderful supportive significant other. Fortunately, my wife is 100% supportive of the hobby here as well (I guess the 10D, 70-200 IS, and 17-40, and 550EX in my bag kinda allude to that support; well that or else I would be sleeping on the couch a lot). Of course after years (and years and years) of graduate school, she is just ecstatic that I do not have my nose in stats books anymore. She'll take photo geek over stats geek anyday.

Cheers,
Mike

P.S. I hope you really enjoy the new camera. You'll love the lack of shutter lag.

How many? If you don't mind me asking.

Personally, I've only had 1 so far. We celebrated it by having her wedding ring cut off her finger. Long story short = Pregnant/swelling/loss of circulation/lots of tears.

The Botanic Gardens sounds like a much better way to celebrate. I'll have to try that next year.

Have fun,

Joel
