I am not happy with IQ. I also would appreciate any suggestions to get better zoom quality with the same setup.

The first thing I'd suggest is to get out of Auto Mode. That way you can select a single AF point and focus on exactly what you want. Otherwise the focus will end up all over the place (as is evidenced in your samples).

It can also be very difficult to hold the camera steady when there is no viewfinder. Even though most of your shutter speeds were pretty high, I think that camera shake was likely a factor too (esp without image stabilization).

Also, I'd test your lens at f/8 to see if sharpness improves. There's always a battle between shutter speed and aperture! See which one wins.

Lastly, I like the suggestion to check out the 55-250 IS STM. You'll gain both sharpness and stabilization. It's often found at a great discount at the Canon Refurb store.

Best of luck!

Thank you for the reply. I agree with you camera shake was a big factor as all my shots are hand held. Going in one hour to try the following :

1) Use a tripod to avoid camera shake

2) Use my iphone as a remote shutter via wifi to reduce camera shake also

3) Use manual mode

4) USe f/8 to see how the image improves

5) Will look for an EF-S 55-250 IS STM
