Sold 70-210 F2.8 to concentrate on Fuji X but kept D700 with a few small auto-focus primes, but now need some sort of tele and picked up an old 200mm F4 AI. Impressed, but slightly confused re settings.

Manual focus, understood. Switch set to 'M' and focus away.

On exposure dial, 'A' priority does not change lens F stop. If 'F4' (and lens is F4) OK, otherwise under-exposed.

... Because you shall use the lens Aperture ring to select lens F stop. You can work in (A)perture priority mode, but you shall select aperture on the lens ring. Check the "Non-CPU Lenses" section of your camera User manual.

On exposure dial 'M' priority, you can dial up/down the shutter speed to get the 'right' exposure the old way but unless F4 it's not correct (as only F4 works).

You can operate in (M)anual mode exactly the same way: Select Shutter by camera dial and Aperture by lens ring and check over/under exposure in the viewfinder scale.

In 'Set-up' 'Non-CPU lens data' I have created 3 lenses, all 200mm: one F4, one F8, one F16. If you select one of these - and match it to the setting on the lens photo ring - it works perfectly in exposure dial 'M' priority. You dial the shutter speed up/down for the right exposure.

Sorry, wrong! You need just ONE 200mm - F4 (the max lens aperture!)

Have I got it right, or is there a quicker way to change the aperture via the dial or the lens itself rather than menu-diving and/or creating new settings. These 3 will probably suffice. Either inside static or well-lit action.

With AI/AI-S (non-CPU) lenses you change the aperture via the Aperture ring on the lens. Period. Forget using on-camera dials or menu.

Test shot at 1/250 F4

Any advice appreciated - thank you, all.
