Sensible Presumption
1

If Canon perceives the Sony A7r-series to be the primary threat, then it would be sensible for Canon to release a high-MP, full-36x24mm-frame camera, with no mirror, and a sturdy pro/semi-pro build, that would fill the 5Ds/5Ds R segment of the line-up. As others have already mentioned, I doubt that “5D” or “1D” would be part of the name of a new camera that is missing a mirror.

I do not yet know whether I would be interested in such a camera. I am not one of the chorus calling for an end to SLRs.

The 5Ds/5Ds R may well be a one-off, a last best Canon high-resolution SLR.

I do not claim to understand the camera market.
