Araldite,

A layman's question - your first image of a cathedral is in 4:3 proportions. The third image of a cruise boat has more rectangle proportions.

Is it camera setting? If yes, how is done? When do you use or prefer it over the other?

I am not the OP, but many people crop the image (cut off sides or top/bottom) in post production with a photo editor. Sometimes you crop the image differently depending on the image, sometimes you crop the image to remove annoying parts on the edges, sometimes you crop for a particular print size (4x6, 8x10), etc.

However, in most modern cameras, including the E-m10 mark I and II (presumably III also, but I haven't looked at the III), there is a menu option to set the aspect ratio. On the E-m10 mark I, look at page 54 where the following aspect ratios are provided:

  • 4:3
  • 16:9
  • 3:2
  • 1:1
  • 3:4

Note all of these aspect ratios are done by the camera internally cropping the image from the 4:3 version in the JPG image stored on the SD card (the RAW image is not cropped, but it records the aspect ratio used for post processing). The viewfinder or lcd will display the cropped image.

Your E1 did not provide an option to crop to a particular aspect ratio.
