Wide angle comparison: 16-80 vs 18-35 vs Tokina 20-35
2

In my pursuit to find the best wide angle setup for me, I am currently comparing following setups:

  • Nikon 16-80mm f/2.8-4E on D500 (referred to as 16-80)
  • Nikon 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G on D600 (referred to as 18-35)
  • Tokina 20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 on D600 (referred to as 20-35)

This post is to aid you if you are in a similar position.

Opinions and Rambling

The 16-80 is such a great allrounder. It has that boring kit lens feel to it though. And it is overpriced (like crazy). But I like it. Flare is controlled very well.

The 18-35 is my newest lens. It reminds me of the 17-55 which handled great. I love that almost nothing moves when I zoom. Zoom and focus are a bit stiff but feel precise and nice. It is light. I like it. Flare is also controlled very well.

I love the 20-35's haptics and look. The little piecelet of steel just has character. Even though the focus ring on mine is loose and wobbles. On the other hand, I hate that there is no instant manual override and that the front rotates when focusing. I also hate that I don't have a hood for it. Can you even mount one? I like protecting my lenses from mechanical and optical dangers.
This old hag flares like crazy.
The 20-35 seemed to cause some funny metering. It metered too dark, causing increased exposure time and an overexposed image.
The 20-35 also seems wider at 20mm than the 18-35 at 20mm.

Images are next. Enjoy!

Shots were taken RAW, at ISO 100, on a tripod, without refocussing, without VR.
Shots were exported from Lightroom with default settings, only exposure compensation was applied to get roughly equal brightness.
Lighting was weak, but what can you do.
