Incoming Black Crowned Night Heron

Last week on a very windy and chilly day I visited Big John's Pond at Jamaica Bay National Wildlife Refuge here in New York City. Inside the blind I was cozy wearing my winter coat. The little pond was very busy as it seems the birds had the same idea to head there for shelter.

When this black crowned night heron appeared in the sky I picked it up and followed it as it landed at the far side of the pond. I had to track it through many tree branches and was delighted at how well the D500 + Sigma 150-600 Sport remained focused as if nothing was there. All of these images are cropped from about 1/3 the height of the frame.
