Problems using a remote release with a D610

Hello,

I've have an off-brand remote cable release (Pixel TC 252) for my Nikon D610.

I find that I am not able to trigger shutter release using the remote control despite trying all the modes, whether in manual or auto focus. I find that despite going into menu and changing the remote control mode to "quick response remote" and changing the shooting dial to remote control mode, I am unable to shoot. When I press the button on the remote I see a red light but the camera doesn't even attempt to focus.

Any guesses as to why this might be happening? When I want to take the shot without remote with the same settings it works just fine.

Any pointers on this would be hugely helpful!

Thanks,

Arijit
