Hey Everyone,

Thanks in advance for indulging the musings of an indecisive perfectionist :P

I sold all my fuji gear about half a year ago. I was not using it much at that moment and a period of work was coming up that gave me very little time. Plus I could use the cash at the moment for my working gear (renew computer and such, since I am a digital illustrator and concept artist)

Now I am looking into getting back to photography again. I don´t look to become a pro, I did only one paid gig ( a wedding) with nice results (at least for me and the couple who where super happy) and I might do that again in the future, but not necessarily. My main work is illustration, and I occasionally use material from my pictures as reference or base to start some concepts...

I decided to go full frame... and loving mirrorless and having used Sony products in other areas I was immediately drawn to their offering.

And alas! what a great time to jump in FF Sony, with two of their new mark III models just released. I will be getting either in the following months.

but I am torn... get the a7III and save a few bucks or dish out that extra K and go for the R...

having into account my background and my enthusiast use what would be your suggestion?

I thank again in advance your collective wisdom and fare you all a great day! :)

You might want to check B&H, the two cameras are the same price right now.

A7iii. It’s one of those things where if you have to ask, the III will be more than fine.

I am fully aware of the technical differences in a quite comprehensive manner. I was just hoping some experienced user of both to shed some light into the matter.

I just wonder if the extra MO and the lack of AA filter gives the R a considerable edge. Or put in another manner, if we were considering the law of diminishing return... what is the extra % you get in comparative results from the R for the extra 1000 :)

Do you need more megapixels? If you're not sure then it's pretty sure you don't.

Do you want to pay 50% more for a better EVF and rear display?

I live in Germnay... I HATE you guys over the Atlantic... hahahah you get US dollar prices, and AMAZING deals, we get screwed for 25% more of everything in absolute terms hahahaa

Well... that depends. I usually work in very large file formats, and resolution is usually welcome, specially when drawing textures from a specific image for later use. I wouldn´t be so much on the fence if these cameras weren´t SO similar except for those very few points

what makes my needs wrong?

I take no offense in the statement, I am just curious to what made you label them as wrong. They are just needs... they are tailored to my trade. Maybe you were prejudicial or you have a bit of data I may be missing! :D

If you want to do more weddings or events: A7iii

If you need highest possible resolution: A7riii

If your photos are a starting point for illustrations, then such high res would probably not be needed.

Conclusion: A7iii :)

But you get free healthcare for life and free college education for your kids. I would gladly swap places with you !!!

Well, you pay for health care. A percentage of your salary is rerouted to a company of your choice, and that monthly fee covers almost everything. It is compulsory by law that any resident in Germany must have coverage, and if you are in an unemployment situation, the government will arrange for you to be kept under this coverage. Any life saving procedure, ambulance services, ER, helicopter if needed... any surgery, major or minor that is needed for your health betterment is also covered. Dental work too (except implants, and crowns are partially covered), although you can pay extra for an insurance that will cover all this even to a 100% (although it won´t be cheap)

Only optional stuff is not covered, like any aesthetic surgery (unless it is part of a recovery process, like skin treatment after a burn accident)...

All in all I´d say it is far better than what I understand is the system there. Still, in Argentina, where I was born, is even a bit better. You can have a private company, but it is not mandatory, and if you don´t public hospitals (with all of their shortcomings, but with some of the best professionals working for the love of their vocation at least for a sizable time of their practice) will attend you no matter who you are or where you come from.

what about landscapes and architecture?

I imagine the RIII (or even the II) would have an edge

Hahahahah that´s a good way to put it. And I don´t know NY which would be a GREAT plan. Out of my budget at the moment, but not at all a bad idea :D

The a7Rii was my first FF digital camera. It was a powerful tool for low light and high resolution photography. It ate batteries and was much slower writing to memory than the MFT cameras I was using. I didn't need the 42+ megapixel resolution, I got the a7iii, still fantastic in low light and much faster focusing, startup and writing to memory. The battery life is great. Think about what you "need" and are willing to compromise. I am told the a7iii is faster than the a7Riii. I wasn't going to spend the money for what I didn't use or "need".

Hey man! thanks for taking the time to make it clear! And as I said, I would never take offense, specially over a forum discussion. I was just intrigued by such a bold statement. While most of the times a seemingly rude response will be ill backed, there might be that slight chance that there is a kernel of truth behind some words; and at the very least I had to try and pry that off of you.

Now I am glad that it was a mistake and you are a kind and polite person on one hand... and a bit sad at the same time that I was not shown a terrible fault of mine that I fail to see :P
