Sony A6000 & Nikon Nikkor 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 preset focus

I will be taking photos of water skiers with the A600 and a vintage Nikon Nikkor 75-300mm 4.5-5.6 sense.  I will be sitting in the boar right at the rope attachment point.  Using a manual lens on a moving bouncing boat can be a challenge.  Since I know to subject is a constant 75' is there any reason I shouldn't pre focus then lock the  focus by using high quality painters tape on the focus ring.  The same applies to how much telephoto I will use, say 150mm.  Set the push pull and then lock it in with tape.  Now I don't have to worry about focusing sitting in a moving boat or worry about the push pull slider moving .

Just push the button.

On a lens like the 75-300 when you have set focus at say 150mm how much can you love the slider and still stay in focus, is it 150mm +/- 5mm or ????
