Canon EF 35-80mm lens, too old tech?

I have this old Canon cheapish kitlens from the 80-tees, it came with my Canon film camera. It is the plastic mount EF 35-80mm f/4-5,6 power zoom.

On a film camera, the IQ with it was ok, not very good. And it worked.
When I mount this lens on my Canon 30D, the lens zooms, autofocus works (slow), when I press the shutter, the camera takes the photo and then I get error 99. There is something inside the data from the lens that my 30D cannot compute, I guess. Cleaned the contacts and so on, but error 99 all the time after the shutter press.

My question is: does this lens work well on other digital Canon cameras? Does anyone here still use this old one?
