Accurate Color

What's the simplest way to get accurate color in images? Simple includes cost effective.

White card? Color chart? Other?

I am trying to photograph kittens and get accurate color for web viewing to show subtle colors. And I know about about monitor cal and all that. Mine is calibrated with an older Spyder. Maybe upgrade color management soon. I am in a room with natural and 5000k bulbs but can never seem to get the colors right in that I can see when they're off but have trouble correcting properly. Recent issue using a light blue blanket as background came out very washed out, almost white but if I add blue it looks horrible.

I use LR mostly for processing in RAW using only global adjustments.

Like to get some more pop in the pics too. I do use some free On-One presets. I like POP but still have color issues.
