2018 Sony World Photo Awards - Where has all the colour gone?

Just seen an article on the BBC website about the results.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-43810323

Just scanned through the BBC's selection, always trying to learn, and it struck me that, apart from the rather presidential horse in the last picture,  the rest really had a somewhat dull grey tone.    Either a grey white subject, or rather subdued colours.   Nowhere did the colours pop or form a significant part of the picture.

When I compare to the weekly and monthly picture threads here I get a totally different feel.

Do the critics just like sad subjects at the moment that look better in mono?  Or is it just the BBC.?    Is it always more arty to greyscale?   (Should I buy a filter.)

Or perhaps I should take out my  IR camera for some pictures without colour at all.
