CPL circular polariser , color & exposure

I noticed my old polariser seems to give a slightly brown cast in use and is darker on inspection than some modern polarisers. Or perhaps the product photos are simply misleading. Can I do a bit better with a new one re color and exposure? How many stops of light do you lose with your polariser?

(My 15+ year old CPL that has some grinding point on turning it and particles trapped at the edges between the two pieces of glass, probably bits of ground metal. In the absence of knowing how to take it apart, clean and reassemble I think I'll have to spring for a new one)
