Here's a question for the math wizards

I was asked this question and am not enough of a math guy to answer: "If you wanted to take a picture of Great Blue Herons on the nest, and the closest you could get would be about 400-500 yards across a swamp, and the birds 60-80 feet up in a dead tree, what equipment would you need? Is there a way to calculate how much zoom you'd need to get a pic that filled the frame?"

For purposes of this discussion, let's assume a blue heron averages about 4" tall.

Obviously, the sensor size will be important to determine focal length - so let's get an answer for a full-frame sensor, an APS-C sensor and  1" sensor.

Please help (but keep it simple   ).

Greg
