Slow lenses focusing in dark rooms

My Panasonic G7 with the 14-140 lens becomes an f5.6 maximum aperture lens as it approaches the higher focal lengths. In darker rooms, like a wedding reception, it hunts for focus. Its not terrible when I use all the focus points, but when I use the center point only, as I prefer, its pretty slow. I'm putting the spot on an area of good contrast, of course. The focusing assist light is too weak to be of much use unless you're very close to your subject.

I know this is not unheard of with contrast detect autofocus systems, but my dslrs with the same type of focusing don't do this with slow lenses.

Would a phase detect body like the Olympus om-d em-1 mk II give better performance under identical conditions?

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7
