You might try taking pictures with the Tamron 150-600mm lens without a teleconverter first. Most of the time, 960mm equivalent focal length is good enough for me. I've been using it with a Canon T3i (600D) camera for about 3-1/2 years.

The last time I checked the G2 lens is more expensive than the G1 lens (all other things considered equal). You might want to check to see what you purchased. I hope you have good luck taking pictures of eagles. I do not see very many of them where I live.

I should also mention that the G2 lens will accept the Tamron teleconverter lenses (1.4x or 2.0x). I don't think the G1 will accept it. That's what I recall from memory but you might want to verify that.
