a6500 FE 100-400 GM+1.4 converter, what am I doing wrong?

So, I rented an FE 100-400 GM OSS and 1.4 teleconverter to test it out before I buy one and these are the best (focus) that I got this morning. I started out with a minimum ss of 1/1000th, but the ISO was a bit high so I took it down to 1/500th. It didn't seem to matter as far as focus went. Out of 500+ photos this is what I kept, and their softness has got me worried about my camera. Any guesses as to why I couldn't get sharp focus?

The sage grouse was about 12-15 yards away. Teal probably close to the same or slightly further. Prairie dog was close!

I don't want to sound blasphemous, but my Olympus E-5 with 50-200 and 1.4 converter took sharper, clearer photos, even though the AF is 100x better on this camera.

focus on wing, but those little white v shaped feathers are hard and fine.

Focus was right between and below the air sacs.

Focus was on head.

Pretty bright sunlight.

From about 15-20'
