That's a lot of lenses!

However, I suspect that in reality only a tiny number of people ever need to make a calculation like that and nearly all of them are full-time professionals.

Imho, any three lenses in the range of about 24-120mm will cover 90 per cent of the needs for almost everyone else - say, two primes and one zoom. That could give one the chance to keep it tight and so afford some quality glass.

Most folks will buy a lens or two above that, perhaps, to meet a special interest - a UWA for architecture, a macro for critters, a tele for sports/wildlife and events, e.g. But those lenses will often come out only from time to time, in many cases.

It's obviously hard to generalize, but looking around online forums my overall impression is that most people have too much kit, not too little of it, and they've often gone for a sensor size that's bigger and costlier than they really need.

It's amazing what some talented folks can achieve with just one lens - say, Alex Webb and a 35mm prime lens.

Ah, the voice of experience based reason!

Of all the comments in this thread, Petreluk's above offers the best advice. I would do well to bear it in mind.

His message is clearly supported by reference to Alex Webb's work.
