That is not reason for itself anymore. Especially not for pancakes, which are made with small size in mind, and obviously with less and smaller lens elements, which don´t correct as many/much as full sized lens.

I don't know about lenses in general, but the 22mm STM, unlike the 11-22mm, has much less barrel distortion. It's so close to 0 that it's totally irrelevant. The only distortion you'll notice is from the wide angle itself. At the same aperture as the 11-22mm lens, it has less vignetting, less purple fringing, better color, much higher sharpness, nicer overall look. In low light, any advantage the 11-22mm lens may have thanks to image stabilization is irrelevant, because the 22mm lens is much brighter / "faster". So, even being much cheaper and smaller, this is a much better lens for 22mm.
