M50 Initial Impressions
12

I have been thoroughly going through the manual and testing this camera and thought I will give a few impression now.   I will write a non pixel peep review after I have a chance to shoot under more conditions.

The build quality is typical Canon which is excellent.   I like the design and layout.   It's like a miniature DSLR.   When buying a camera this small, I accept that there is going to be trade offs.   I think if I lived somewhere cold and wore gloves a lot, I would prefer more manual controls and dials.   I happen to live in California and rarely find my hands covered, so I have embraced the touch screen era and think that Canon has one of the best.
That being said I still like the ability to press a button to find what I need and I have setup the Movie button and trash button as custom options.   Just like on my M3 and G9X the Q/set button brings up 90% of what I need so I don't feel limited at all.  When you really know your camera and how you want to shoot, I almost never feel panicked looking for a setting under pressure anymore.   I think it just takes experience and a willingness to embrace your camera manual, do a custom setup, and practice.   I own most other brands and have the Quick menus and custom buttons setup on all of them.
Even though I don't miss the extra dials on the M5, I do wish this camera had the C1 and C2 options.   I don't use those a lot, however I do like to have those set for certain events.  So that is one feature missing  that is not obvious in the spec sheet.

The EVF is not huge but its very very usable and seems to be even more clear than my FZ1000 EVF which has been praised as excellent.  Also similar to the OMD EM1 I had.
I read that buffer is small on the M50 even though its larger than all the other Ms.   I tested it and JPEG got 93 shots in about 10 seconds.   The first 3 seconds almost 30 shots and the slow down after that was not bad.  In Raw it was 10 then noticeably slower.   Giving it a few second break got me another burst of 10 pretty quickly.

The AF was wonderful, but if you have the M3 like I did, I would not expect your 22mm F2 to focus faster in low light.   I think that's just physics and that lens.   It's a great lens, but you can't be in a hurry in super low light.   This probably goes for all my f2 or greater lenses from any brand.   Touch and Drag is a bonus on the M6 and M50.
I think it's sad any time a cameras flash cannot be tilted back to bounce.   That should just be the industry standard for all flashes.    The M50 flash cannot be tilted.  Bummer!
The new Bluetooth and Wifi connectivity is very nice and works very well.
As far as battery life, I am not stressed, I always order and carry a few backups.
I don't plan to use this for video so I don't care about the crop factor.   I will say even with my 11-22 on it at 11mm, the crop is still tight.   My FZ1000 which had 4K 4 years ago also crops to the center 8MP, as do many other cameras, so I dont think this is unique, but I do think Canon is behind here.  I think even if they come out with an amazing 4K mirrorless, the could have sold a lot more of these with a better 4K debut on the M50.
I like the M50 a lot so far and I am not experiencing an ounce of buyers remorse.  It checks a lot of boxes for me.  I will sum it up this way.   If you want a tiny APS-C camera with an EVF and a hot shoe, I see no reason not buy this camera.   For me I think it nudges out the M5 which is around the same price refurbished at Canon.   Will I produce better images than I could with an M5?  Probably not.   Maybe the AF is crisper on occasion or the buffer gets me an extra shot!  But basically I chose this camera for the Articulated Screen, the Touch and Drag AF, and enhanced connectivity.   That connectivity is nice when you are a photographer at your kids event and they want to share.   Yes I take event photos all the time with tiny cameras and have the parents with full frames and giant lenses who thought they could buy their way into being a photographer asking me for photos and help.  I am helpful to them and don't criticize their gear.   I just like small and light and all of the these modern cameras are all pretty amazing once you figure them out.
