Re: Filter use G1x Mark lll - Lens Cap Alternative

Greetings, I just joined so I could pass on my experience with this issue.

I was disappointed in the awkward lens cap on my Canon G1X III. It's hard to get on and gets in the way when off if you use the supplied thin cap keeper cord.

The Fotasy ALC-LX100 auto lens cap on my LX100 looks fine closed, but very strange opened, but it seems to do a good job and is removable and replaceable, which matter to me.

I much prefer the stealthy lens closure on the Sony RX100 but have had four failures over the years, and frankly, can't rely on it for travel, so I am evaluating the G1X III and LX100.

Thanks to our friend above I tested the JCC Z-Cap Z-O14-42 for Olympus 14-42mm EZ lens at around $13 from Amazon.
It works like the Sony, and is as thin as you could imagine, but it is easily replaceable if it locks up partially or fully. The outer diameter is about 52mm which is more than the filter diameter and slightly less than the zoom ring so it doesn't interfere.
It screws on to the G1x III lens thread and makes the camera looks great and the lens cover opens and closes just like the SONY RX100. As described before the two tiny protrusions on the back are triggered when the lens opens and closes activating the lens cover instantly.
An additional benefit is that this cover is a bit smoother and slimmer (~5mm) with less edges to catch on fabric making the camera just a bit more pocket-able, which is important to me.

So far: flawless operation, no noticeable vignetting and looks factory designed.
If anything changes I'll post back.

As for the camera comparison, I love the LX100 aperture and shutter speed dials with their intuitive manual or auto settings - simplicity and clarity, no menus needed. Bonus exposure comp dial also. Even the AF/MF on the side of the lens is a rotating click stop
switch, and the manual focus ring with auto viewfinder zoom has me doing manual focus which I never did with the RX100.

From my first uses of the canon, it's less intuitive and more menu driven, but I like the weather sealing and articulated display. Maybe the 24MP will make up for the lack of longer zoom by allowing more cropping. I got mine slightly used for a bargain price, but list price is hard to justify over the LX100.

I don't pixel peep, though I love sharpness, contrast and clarity, but I most want a high quality low-light sensitive travel camera I can rely on when I don't want to or can't use my DSLR.  I don't do much video.
For a while I'll use both and see which holds up better or becomes the favorite.
Happy to answer questions not already dealt with in the reviews.
