I haven't been all over Cuba, but spent just one week only in Havana.
It was enough to leave a lasting impression.
I was there to do the photography for an alternative city travel guidebook, part of the "500 Hidden Secrets" series.
I like how your images capture some of the colourful essence of the city.

These galleries do not include the images made on commission for the book, but show my own impressions of the city.
Wow, you've got some fantastic photos, there, Roel. You definitely spent more time than I, giving the city an in-depth look with a photographer's eye. Can you tell me how you worked while you were there? Did you have a guide/interpreter? Did you develop your own list of things you had to photograph? Were you given a list of must-shoot items?
Simple:
- I was there to photograph the items they wanted for the "500 Hidden Secrets" guide book, so I had lists with roughly 150 items (restaurants, shops, culture, you name it), scattered all over the city, and I had plotted these onto detailed maps of the different parts of the city
- but while I walked or took bicitaxis from one location to the next, I kept my eyes open and shot whatever extra fancied me : the results of that are in those two galleries (the commissioned shots are in another)
- I did not have a guide or interpreter, but I seldom do : I prefer to be totally on my own for these phototrips
- I stayed in three different casas particolares during the week I was there, in order to have different kick-off points on different days
- the rest is a matter of getting up at least an hour before sunrise and going to sleep way beyond sunset...
