It's the first lens one should get! https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-first-fujifilm-lenses-you-should-buy/

The camera comes with a good 18-55 already, and I'm having a hard time imagining when I would trouble to switch that out for the 35mm. The 35 opens up a stop or so wider, but loses the OIS so that's a wash.

One could reasonably make the small and light case, but wouldn't the pancake be a better answer?

What am I missing? Why is the 35mm a must-have lens?

First, the 35/2 is more like 1.5 stops faster at the same focal length.

For living subjects that move, no OIS in the world will save you. There are no shortcuts. You need a fast lens.

35/2 is much smaller and lighter. Perfect for street shooting  etc.

35/2 is weather sealed.

35/2 has faster focusing. Really good actually.

35/2 is a perfect walk around lense for shooting people/ street/portraits etc.

The zoom is more a general purpose lens e.g. for travel.
