It's the first lens one should get! https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-first-fujifilm-lenses-you-should-buy/

The camera comes with a good 18-55 already, and I'm having a hard time imagining when I would trouble to switch that out for the 35mm. The 35 opens up a stop or so wider, but loses the OIS so that's a wash.

One could reasonably make the small and light case, but wouldn't the pancake be a better answer?

What am I missing? Why is the 35mm a must-have lens?

In regard to the bolded text, I think the answer you need to hear is "if you need to ask, then you don't need it."

As others have said, even a cursory look around the forum will give you more information than necessary to answer your question. My two sentence explanation follows: 35mm f/2 is capable of lots of types of photos, including portraits with a thin depth of field to isolate the subject. The 18-55 is going to have a max aperture in the f/3.5 range above 35mm, so it is not as capable of a portrait lens.

Personally, I prefer the 23mm f/2 for the utility of its field of view while still being compact, so I'm not going to try to sell you on a lens I don't use.
