R2D2 You have summed it up very nicely. DPAF is not up to the task of shooting fast moving sports where the subject to camera distance changes quickly. And, shooting sport using the rear screen is next to impossible anyway.

To the OP. The SL2 using the centre point will perform well for amateur sport. There are certainly other options costing more but you will get many great shots using the SL2.

Using multiple auto focus points (zone focusing) is prone to focus error as the points can cover multiple subjects (think players in close proximity in team sports) and not acquire focus on the desired player.

I have owned the 70D, 80D, M5 and now the 6D2 all with DPAF and I shoot a lot of sport and DPAF has never worked well. I have also owned the SL1 and other Rebels and like R2D2 says, Canon have always had good servo focusing performance using viewfinder focusing (PDAF).
