Actually they sold well. Almost all TVs sold then had 3D capacity. I was told it cost close to nothing to implement.

The problems that you describe are mostly for active TVs. My 4K Sony active 3D shows horrible ghosting. It almost not usable. My friends passive LG still works find, despite loss of resolution.
