Has Canon abandoned premium compact business?
1

Sure, Canon released G1 X Mark III in 2017 - but it's priced so high, this will likely be a backup camera for pros and not enthusiasts - and their first choice.

IMO the last actual premium compact Canon has released was G7X Mark II. That was over 2 years ago! And no rumors with anything better coming out.

Yes you could argue that G9 X Mark II was released but that's not taking the game to the next level. Slow lens and smaller form factor aims to please those who are looking for a step up from cell phone quality, not best possible quality from a compact camera.

Maybe they're putting all their effort into the new mirrorless camera and putting compact premium camera development on hold. Which would be a shame because I believe there's still market for those who want the best possible performance from a pocketable camera. But sales numbers may disagree with me, sadly.
